Effects of Tropical Sea Surface Temperature Variability on Northern Hemisphere Tropical Cyclone Genesis

چکیده

Abstract This study quantifies the contributions of tropical sea surface temperature (SST) variations during boreal warm season to interannual-to-decadal variability in cyclone genesis frequency (TCGF) over Northern Hemisphere ocean basins. The first seven leading modes SST are found affect basinwide TCGF one or more basins, and related canonical El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), global warming (GW), Pacific meridional mode (PMM), Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO), decadal (PDO), (AMM). These account for approximately 58%, 50%, 56% variance 1969–2018 North (NA), northeast (NEP), northwest (NWP) Oceans, respectively. effect is weak on north Indian Ocean. dominating differ among basins: ENSO, AMO, AMM, GW dominant NA; ENSO AMO NEP; PMM, interannual NWP. A specific may have opposite effects different particularly between NA NEP. Sliding-window multiple linear regression analyses show that stable time NWP, but strengthened since 1990s local TC occurrence also explored, underlying physical mechanisms examined by diagnosing a potential index its components.

Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone activity

[1] Recent historical Northern Hemisphere (NH) tropical cyclone (TC) inactivity is compared with strikingly large observed variability during the past three decades. Yearly totals of the combined active-basin NH accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) are highly correlated with boreal spring seasurface temperature (SST) in the North Pacific Ocean and are representative of an evolving dual-gyre, trans-...

Predicting Tropical Cyclone Genesis

The long-term goal of this project is to provide probabilistic genesis forecast guidance to operational forecasters and develop a genesis index to provide guidance for operational dynamical model prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis. Once regions of high TC genesis probability are identified, a movable, multi-nested version of the COAMPS with resolution of roughly 3 km or less in the inn...

Effects of surface heat flux-induced sea surface temperature changes on tropical cyclone intensity

[1] It is known that in deep and open oceans, the effect of sea surface sensible and evaporative heat fluxes on the tropical cyclone-induced sea surface cooling is small compared to that caused by turbulent mixing and cold water entrainment into the upper ocean mixed-layer. This study shows that tropical cyclone-induced surface heat fluxes dominate the surface cooling in near-coastal shallow oc...

Tropical cyclone rainfall area controlled by relative sea surface temperature

Tropical cyclone rainfall rates have been projected to increase in a warmer climate. The area coverage of tropical cyclones influences their impact on human lives, yet little is known about how tropical cyclone rainfall area will change in the future. Here, using satellite data and global atmospheric model simulations, we show that tropical cyclone rainfall area is controlled primarily by its e...
